Oh, the Places I’ve Been

As I concluded my last trip, and my time is winding down, I thought I might as well reflect on my extracurricular activities. To briefly recap, I have been able to visit the following places:

  • Madrid, Spain
  • Toledo, Spain
  • Avila, Spain
  • Lisbon, Portugal
  • Galicia, Spain
  • Sahara Desert, Morocco
  • Segovia, Spain
  • Sevilla, Spain
  • Merida, Spain
  • Prague, Czech Republic

How I managed to go this many places in such a short amount of time, I do not know. However, I know that I am extremely privileged to have experienced more places than most people will ever see. I find it funny that I have probably seen more of Europe (including my last study abroad) than I have the United States. To believe I have been to half a dozen capital cities, none of which are Washington D.C., is incredible.

Each place was unique, but my favorite trip was undeniably Lisbon. The city was beautiful, the people were inviting (and spoke English), and the food was life changing. Furthermore, my most memorable trip will probably be Morocco. A five-day excursion with 2 ten-hour bus rides with no bathrooms on board and lodging in the middle of the Sahara desert. I have never been to a desert before, and I am considering it as my favorite ecosystem. You had to endure the unrelenting sun during the day, and the freezing cold at night. My favorite part of that trip were the nights. The stars have never been so clear the night has never been so dark. To quote a Moroccan liaison at out site; “Enjoy the serenity of the desert”.

This semester abroad has been incomparable, but I had a sad realization that I won’t have another opportunity to put my life on hold for 80 days. However, I can start dreaming about future trips.
